The issue of what should happen to a person’s digital assets after their death has recently come under the spotlight, with the Law Society of England and Wales recommending that they should be included in wills or estate plans.
Digital assets can include social media accounts, online banking and investment accounts, and even music and films.
The Law Society highlights that people shouldn’t assume that family members will know what digital assets exist or where to find them. It therefore recommends that all these accounts should be clearly listed to make it easier for family members to deal with them after a death.
"As technology has evolved, so has the way we store information,” explained Law Society president Nicholas Fluck. “Simple things such as photographs, which in the past we could have flicked through in a printed album, are now stored online.”
“By making our wishes clear now, it will be easier for loved ones to recover pictures to cherish and will help with the more practical issues such as online bank accounts," he added.
