In a recent court case, mother of four Siobhan McLaughlin applied for widowed parent’s allowance to support herself and children following the death of her partner, John Adams, in 2014. Her application was initially rejected by the Northern Ireland Department for Communities on the basis that they were unmarried.

A British court has recognised Sharia law for the first time after a judge made a landmark divorce ruling which could change the way Islamic marriage and divorce works in the UK.

Researchers from the Universities of Bristol and Cambridge have looked at financial settlements on divorce in England and Wales to analyse the characteristics of cases and settlements or orders resolved at different stages. 

Researchers have carried out many different studies over the years into the health impacts of marriage and divorce, and a new study has added weight to the idea that marriage can be beneficial for health while divorce can have a detrimental effect. 

On 17th May the UK’s Supreme Court heard the case of Owens v Owens, a contested divorce case that has been brought to the Supreme Court on appeal from the Court of Appeal of England and Wales.
