Survey sheds light on divorce trends

Grant Thornton has recently published details of its latest matrimonial survey, which it conducts every year by questioning UK family lawyers about current family law trends.

The 2013 survey revealed some interesting statistics regarding divorce in the UK.

When asked about the age of their divorce clients, 86% of lawyers indicated the most common age group was those aged 40 to 49. Over half (53%) said they were not aware of any change in the age of their divorce clients, although 38% did report seeing an overall increase in their clients’ ages.

Growing apart/falling out of love continues to be most common reason for divorce, accounting for 29% of responses. The second most common reason was an extra-marital affair, which was mentioned by 24% of respondents. The next three most common reasons were unreasonable behaviour, mid-life crisis and financial or money worries.

Around 63% of lawyers reported that the majority of their divorcing clients had been married between 11 and 20 years. However, 14% said the majority of their clients were divorcing after 20 years of marriage, which is a sharp increase over the 4% who said the same in the previous year’s survey.
